Our Story

Our journey is a long story which started from our direct experience of being new to Plymouth and not understanding how to feel part of any community.
Over 12 years ago we arrived from Africa and soon learnt that work needed to be done to help people integrate into the city.
In that time we have embedded ourselves in the Plymouth community and have learnt so much about the needs of diverse community members.

As result we consciously and continuously talk to people to know their own experiences in comparison to ours, consideration the reception and perception they experience from their interaction with the community.
More recently we consulted with our beneficiaries via face-to-face meetings, responses to our social media ‘shout outs’ and via a dedicated WhatsApp group for parents and young people.

Our mission

To Bring Communities Together For a Stronger Plymouth
We want people from all backgrounds to visit us on Union Street to make new friends and feel connected to one another.
We aim to do this via the joy of food, celebrations and culture.

Chris Marrow

Director
Sir Chris has led a long and extraordinarily varied career. He started as a Merchant Navy deck officer, but came ashore when he married and ran a shipping office in London as director and general manager. Finding this stifling, he moved back to shipping by going to the Orkney Isles and pioneering a completely new type of inter-island service that became firmly established and revolutionized inter-island transport there.

When his company was taken over by the local authority, he refurbished a former military landing craft and sailed it to Mozambique where he used two such craft in the civil war to feed displaced people who had fled the fighting to seek safety in remote islands and locations. This started a period of many years in Africa, which included re-exploring the long-closed river route from Malawi to the Indian Ocean by the Shire River and the Zambezi to see if it could once again be a viable route for Malawi. This lead to many more roles in Africa, including running the fleet of ships on Lake Malawi. He continues to work for Africa and is part of an international group seeking to clean out the plastics from the Congo River.

In acknowledgement of his work for Africa he has been made a Knight of the Order of the Leopard by Queen Diambi Kabatusuila. He is currently an advisory board member of South West Business Council, as well as being a director of The Elikia Hope Foundation which seeks to further Queen Diambi’s humanitarian work in Africa.
